Today is the United Nations International Day of Happiness. What a wonderful concept. Thank you Bhutan. That's where this idea got off the ground. Bhutan's fourth Dragon King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, coined the concept - Gross National Happiness - in 1972 to ensure his modernising nation built its economy on Buddhist spiritual values. Listening to RN on the way to my blogging class an Australian UN worker in Bhutan explained how all government decisions had to pass the "happiness" test. For example, would a decision affecting an important environmental asset pass the test? We could sure do with that here.
